The stretch fabric lets in a small amount of air to prevent you from sweating too much during heavy exertion in cold temperatures, as moisture is a major cause of sudden cooling of the body. The Polartec Alpha second layer insulates with high breathability and is extremely lightweight for minimal bulk.

The back is made of Nano Flex Xtra Dry fabric, which provides a good level of insulation but without a membrane, allowing for excellent sweat wicking. Its close fit prevents the fabric from separating and billowing.
