Hardtail or full suspension?

Hardtails have a suspension fork and a rigid rear end. They are lighter, cheaper, simpler to look after and better at teaching you to pick a line. For trail centre blues and reds, bridleways and mixed riding from the door, a good hardtail is all most riders need. Black Friday money buys you a better fork and brakes than the same budget would in spring.

Full suspension bikes add a rear shock and linkage. They are more comfortable and more capable on rough, steep and technical ground, and they keep you fresher on long days. They also cost more, weigh more and have more bearings and seals to service.

Here is the trade-off at sale time. At the same price, a hardtail will have better parts than a full suspension bike, because the full suspension frame itself costs more to make. Below about £1,500, a well-specced hardtail usually rides better than a budget full suspension bike with a basic shock and heavy wheels.

Mountain bike deals by budget

Discounts can lift you a tier at Black Friday. These are the spec levels to expect at each budget, so you can tell a well-priced bike from a cheap one.

What to check before buying a discounted mountain bike

A big saving on the wrong bike is still the wrong bike. Run through these before you pay.

  1. 1

    Fork travel

Around 100mm suits cross-country, 120mm is a capable trail hardtail, and 140mm and up is for steeper, rougher riding. More travel is not automatically better if your trails are mellow.

  2. 2

    Wheel size

29in wheels roll over roots and rocks more easily. 27.5in feels more playful and suits smaller riders. Mixed wheels, 29in front and 27.5in rear, sit in between.

  3. 3

    1x drivetrain

A single chainring with a wide-range cassette is simpler, lighter and easier to use. Most good mountain bikes now use 1x. Treat a 2x or 3x setup as a sign of an older or cheaper spec.

  4. 4

    Dropper post

Lowering your saddle at the press of a lever transforms descending. If the bike doesn’t have one, check the frame has internal routing so you can add one later.

  5. 5

    Geometry and size

Modern bikes are longer and slacker, and sizes vary between brands. Check the reach figure against your height and the brand’s chart, not just S, M or L.

  6. 6

    Tyre width

Trail bikes usually run 2.3 to 2.4in tyres. Check the clearance if you want to go wider, and whether the rims and tyres are set up for tubeless.

  7. 7

    Boost spacing

Most current bikes use Boost hubs, 110mm front and 148mm rear. Older non-Boost standards limit your wheel upgrades, so check before buying a discounted older model.

Looking at an e-MTB?

Electric mountain bikes follow the same model-year discount pattern, and the saving in pounds can be bigger because the bikes cost more to start with. The checks are a little different: motor, battery capacity, range and the service network all matter as much as the fork.

We cover e-MTBs alongside commuter and e-gravel bikes on our Black Friday e-bike deals page.

Watch out for bike and accessory bundles

Some Black Friday offers bundle a bike with a helmet, pedals, a pump or a lock and quote a total “saving”. Read these carefully. The extras are often priced at full RRP, so the headline saving is mostly made up of accessories you could buy cheaper on their own, or may not need at all.

Work out the bike price on its own, then compare it with the same bike elsewhere. If the bundle still wins once the extras are valued at their sale price, great. If not, buy the bike and pick the kit from the rail below.

MTB kit for less

MTB tyres, helmets and flat or clipless shoes. Consumables like tyres usually stay discounted through Cyber Monday, so there is less rush here than with bikes.

Need lights, a helmet or winter kit?

The clocks go back on Sunday 25 October, and winter trail riding needs warm, tough kit. Our accessories and clothing pages cover the rest of the sale.

Questions we get asked

Are mountain bikes cheaper on Black Friday?

Usually, yes. New model years arrive from late summer, so by late November retailers are clearing outgoing stock. Black Friday 2026 is Friday 27 November and Cyber Monday is Monday 30 November. Retailers have not announced 2026 MTB offers yet (checked 6 October).

Should I buy a hardtail or full suspension mountain bike?

For trail centres, bridleways and mixed riding, a good hardtail is lighter, cheaper and easier to maintain. For steep, rough, technical trails, full suspension is more comfortable and capable. At the same price, a hardtail will usually come with better parts.

What is a good mountain bike under £1,000?

Look for an aluminium hardtail with a 100 to 120mm fork, hydraulic disc brakes and a 1x drivetrain. A dropper post is a bonus. Avoid budget full suspension bikes at this price, as the shock and parts are usually basic.

Should I choose 29in or 27.5in wheels?

Most riders are well served by 29in wheels, which roll over obstacles more easily and carry speed. 27.5in wheels feel more playful and can suit smaller riders and smaller frame sizes. Mixed wheel setups sit in between.

Are Black Friday mountain bike bundles good value?

Check the bike price on its own against other UK retailers, then decide whether the extras are worth having.

Can I use Cycle to Work on a Black Friday mountain bike?

Often, if the retailer accepts your scheme provider and lets you order at the sale price. Rules vary between providers, employers and retailers, so check all three before you apply. Our Cycle to Work guide explains the process.

Are Black Friday e-MTB deals worth waiting for?

E-MTBs follow the same model-year pattern as other mountain bikes, and the saving in pounds can be large. Check the motor, battery and service support as well as the price. Our Black Friday e-bike deals page covers e-MTBs in more detail.
