How to buy a cycling gift without knowing their size or setup

Most cyclists are fussy about a handful of things and relaxed about everything else. Buy from the relaxed list and you can surprise them without asking a single suspicious question.

Safe bets. Rechargeable lights, socks, caps, neck warmers, bottles, multi-tools, chain lube, cleaning kits and a floor pump for the hallway. None of these depend on their exact bike or body shape.

Proceed with care. Clothing works if you know their size in that brand. Cycling kit is cut close, often runs small and varies a lot between makers. Helmets are sized by head measurement, so a gift receipt is essential.

Leave these to them. Saddles, pedals and shoes are personal. Saddles depend on anatomy, and pedals and shoes have to match the cleat system (the clip-in plate on the sole) they already use. Get it wrong and it lives in a drawer. A gift card, or a cheerful “I’ll pay, you choose”, works far better.

Ask their riding mates. The people they ride with know exactly what they have been moaning about: a dying rear light, a pump that won’t stay on the valve, frozen fingers. That is your shopping list.

Always get a gift receipt. And keep the packaging intact until they have tried it.

Gift-buying cheat sheet

Five minutes in the hallway with their bike answers most of these. Take a photo of the tyre while you’re there.

  1. 1

    Check the valve type

Thin with a small locknut at the tip is Presta, used on most road and gravel bikes. Chunky like a car tyre valve is Schrader. Pumps, inner tubes and CO2 inflators need to match.

  2. 2

    Read the tyre sidewall

The size is printed on the side of the tyre, for example 700x28c on a road bike or 29x2.4 on a mountain bike. Inner tubes have to cover that size.

  3. 3

    Prefer USB-C charging

Lights and gadgets that charge over USB-C share a cable with most new phones and laptops, which makes them easier to live with.

  4. 4

    Know their clothing size

Cycling kit is snug by design and sizing varies between brands. Check the label on something they already wear, ideally from the same brand.

  5. 5

    Measure for a helmet

Helmets are sized by head circumference, measured just above the eyebrows. If you can’t measure, choose one with a dial adjuster and keep the receipt.

  6. 6

Match the gift to the riding

Road riders like light and neat. Mountain bikers want tough and washable. Commuters want bright and lockable. Indoor riders want anything that makes the pain cave less painful.

Christmas delivery and returns: what to know

Delivery cut-offs aren’t published yet. UK retailers haven’t announced their 2026 Christmas last-order dates (checked 6 October). When they do, they will vary by retailer and by delivery option, so check each retailer’s delivery page before you order rather than relying on anyone’s round-up.

Our rule of thumb: order before mid-December. That isn’t a deadline any retailer has promised, just a sensible buffer for busy couriers and the odd size swap. Christmas Day is Friday 25 December 2026.

Bulky gifts need longer. Turbo trainers, floor pumps and anything in a big box can travel on slower services. Order those early, ideally over Black Friday.

Returns policies vary. Many retailers extend returns over the festive period, but the terms differ, especially for sale items and clothing that has been worn. Read the policy before you buy, ask for a gift receipt and keep the packaging.

Early is also cheaper. The best few days of the year for cycling gifts run from Black Friday, Friday 27 November, to Cyber Monday, Monday 30 November. Buying then leaves weeks for delivery and swaps. See our Black Friday bike deals hub.

Buy gifts over Black Friday

Black Friday 2026 is Friday 27 November, with Cyber Monday on the 30th. It’s the cheapest time of year to buy cycling gifts, and it leaves plenty of time for delivery and size swaps.

Questions we get asked

What are good Christmas gifts for cyclists?

Things they will use on every ride: rechargeable lights, winter gloves, a thermal or merino base layer, socks, a multi-tool, chain lube or a cleaning kit. Bigger budgets stretch to a smart turbo trainer or a GPS bike computer. Avoid saddles, pedals and shoes unless they have told you the exact model.

What do you buy a cyclist who has everything?

Consumables and upgrades. Every rider gets through inner tubes, chain lube, cleaning products, energy snacks and socks, and nobody minds spares. Upgrading something they already own, such as a brighter light or a better floor pump, also goes down well.

What is a good cycling gift under £50?

Winter gloves, a rechargeable light set, a base layer, a mini pump, a cleaning kit or a saddle bag with a multi-tool inside. Our gifts under £50 page has live deals in each of these, and our stocking fillers page covers everything under £25.

When is the cheapest time to buy cycling gifts?

Black Friday week. In 2026 Black Friday is Friday 27 November and Cyber Monday is Monday 30 November. Gift categories such as clothing, lights and turbo trainers are reliably discounted then. In 2025, for example, the Wahoo Kickr Core 2 smart trainer dropped to £399.99 from £499.99 (2025 price).

When should I order cycling gifts for Christmas delivery?

Retailers have not published their 2026 Christmas delivery cut-offs yet (checked 6 October). Check each retailer’s delivery page before ordering. As a rule of thumb, order before mid-December, and earlier for bulky items like turbo trainers.

Can I return a cycling gift after Christmas?

Usually, but policies vary by retailer, and sale items or worn clothing can have different terms. Check the returns policy before you buy, ask for a gift receipt and keep the packaging until the recipient has tried the gift.

What should I avoid buying a cyclist?

Saddles, pedals and cycling shoes, unless you know the exact model. They depend on anatomy and on the cleat system the rider already uses. Clothing is fine if you know their size in that brand.
