Forget the novelty mugs. Most riders would rather have something that makes the next ride, or the next repair, a bit easier.
Work out which kind of rider he is. The club rider wants tech and kit. The tinkerer wants tools. The commuter wants lights and a good lock. The cycling dad who rides with the kids wants things that fix punctures fast. Our road cyclist, commuter and mountain biker guides go deeper.
Tools are the safest bet. Nobody owns too many good Allen keys, and a proper floor pump or pocket ratchet doesn’t depend on his size or his bike. They’re also the things riders put off buying.
Clothing needs a size. Cycling kit varies between brands and is cut close to the body. Check a label on a jersey or bib he already wears, ideally the same brand, and get a gift receipt.
Tech needs one question. If he already uses a Garmin or Wahoo computer, he’s unlikely to want to switch. A new computer suits riders still using a phone. Otherwise, a lock, a light or a pump is a safer surprise.
Skip saddles, pedals and shoes unless he’s named the exact model. They depend on his body and the cleats he already uses.
