Commuters ride in all weather, in the dark, and leave their bike in public for hours. Buy for those three problems and you can’t go far wrong.
Lights come first. A bright front light and a rear light that can be seen from a distance are the most useful gifts in December. Choose USB-C rechargeable so they can charge at their desk. See our bike light deals for more.
Then a better lock. Sold Secure ratings go Bronze, Silver, Gold and Diamond. For a bike left all day in a town centre or at a station, Gold or Diamond is worth having. A frame bracket saves carrying it in a bag.
Get the bag off their back. A waterproof pannier carries a laptop and a change of clothes without a sweaty back. Panniers need a rear rack, so check the bike has one or add a rack.
Keep them dry. Mudguards, overshoes and a breathable waterproof make the difference between arriving soggy and arriving ready to work. Jackets need a size, mudguards need the right fit for the frame.
Big gift? Use the scheme. If their employer runs Cycle to Work, a new commuter bike or kit bundle can come out of gross salary, which saves tax and National Insurance. Our Cycle to Work guide explains how.
