New riders usually have the bike sorted, or it’s the main present. What they’re missing are the bits that make riding safe, comfortable and fuss-free.
Safety first: a helmet and lights. A helmet fitted to their head, plus a front and rear light set with USB charging. In the UK winter it’s dark by mid-afternoon, so lights matter from day one. Our bike light and helmet deals pages have more.
Then the puncture kit. A saddle bag, a spare inner tube that matches their tyre size, a pair of tyre levers and a multi-tool. It’s the kit that turns a puncture from a phone call home into a ten-minute stop.
A floor pump makes everything easier. Bikes ride faster and puncture less with properly inflated tyres. A pump with a gauge takes the guesswork out.
A lock if the bike leaves the house. A light U-lock is fine for quick café stops. If they’ll lock it at a station or overnight, buy a higher Sold Secure rating. See our commuter gift guide.
Comfort comes next. Padded gloves and padded shorts make longer rides much more pleasant. Clothing needs a size, so keep the receipt.
Still choosing the bike? If they haven’t bought one yet, our guides to choosing a first road bike and the best road bikes for beginners will help. If they’re employed, the Cycle to Work scheme can make the bike itself much cheaper.

Measure just above the eyebrows. If you can’t, choose a dial-fit helmet and keep the receipt.
Thin with a locknut is Presta, car-style is Schrader. Pumps and tubes must match.
Printed on the tyre sidewall, e.g. 700x35c. Spare tubes must cover that size.
Quick stops need a light lock. Stations and overnight need Sold Secure Gold or better.
Lights that charge over USB-C share a cable with most phones, which makes them easier to live with.

Big gift? Use the scheme
If they’re employed and their workplace runs the scheme, a bike or kit bundle can be paid for out of gross salary. On the basic rate, £100 of bike costs about £72 of take-home pay.

Black Friday 2026
Buy the big gifts while the sale is on
Friday 27 November and Cyber Monday 30 November are the cheapest window for Christmas shopping.
Open the guideThe essentials: a helmet, a front and rear light set, a floor pump, a saddle bag with a spare tube, tyre levers and a multi-tool, and a lock if the bike is left outside. Padded gloves and chamois cream make longer rides more comfortable.
Yes, if you know their head size. Measure around the head just above the eyebrows and match it to the brand’s size chart, or choose a helmet with a dial adjuster. Always ask for a gift receipt.
Tyre levers, a saddle bag, padded mitts, arm warmers, chamois cream or a basic lock. Several of our picks above are under £25 today. Our stocking fillers page has more ideas in that budget.
Not on their behalf. Cycle to Work is a salary sacrifice scheme that the rider applies for through their own employer. If they’re planning to buy a bike, it can save them a good chunk of the cost, and you could cover the accessories instead.
Black Friday week. In 2026 Black Friday is Friday 27 November and Cyber Monday is Monday 30 November. Lights, helmets and pumps are often discounted then.
