Indoor riders fall into two camps: people who already own a trainer and people who want one. Work out which before you shop.
If they don’t have a trainer yet, a smart trainer is the gift. A wheel-on or entry smart trainer gets them riding in Zwift or similar apps. A direct-drive trainer, where the rear wheel comes off and the chain sits on the trainer’s cassette, feels more realistic and is quieter. Our best turbo trainers guide compares them.
Check the bike. Direct-drive trainers need to suit the rear axle and the number of gears. Most current trainers come with adapters, but check the retailer’s compatibility notes against their bike.
If they already have one, buy for comfort. A sweat towel, a big cold bottle, chamois cream and chain care all get used on every session. Accessories like the Wahoo Climb only work with specific trainers, so check the model.
Apps cost money too. Zwift and similar apps usually charge a monthly subscription. A trainer bundle that includes kit for Zwift is a good start, but the subscription is separate. Read our guide to the Zwift Ride on Black Friday for a worked example.
Buy the big one on Black Friday. Smart trainers are reliably among the most discounted cycling gifts of Black Friday week. In 2026 that’s Friday 27 November to Cyber Monday, 30 November.
