Trainers we’re price-watching

Trainers and smart bikes we track across UK retailers. Each card shows today’s price and the lowest price we have recorded.

Direct-drive, wheel-on or smart bike?

There are three ways to ride indoors, and the right one depends more on how often you’ll train than on the size of the discount.

Wheel-on trainers. Your rear tyre sits against a roller. They’re the cheapest way in, quick to set up and easy to store. The trade-offs: more noise, tyre wear (a dedicated trainer tyre helps), and power readings that drift with tyre pressure. Fine for occasional winter spins.

Direct-drive smart trainers. You take the rear wheel off and mount the bike straight onto the trainer’s cassette body. Quieter, more accurate, more realistic road feel, and they can control resistance for you in ERG mode or on virtual climbs. This is where most Black Friday trainer money goes, and where the discounts are most reliable. Check whether a cassette is included and that the trainer fits your axle standard.

Smart bikes. A complete indoor bike with the resistance unit built in, adjustable fit and usually virtual shifting. Think Wattbike, Kickr Bike or Tacx Neo Bike. No wear on your road bike and no swapping it in and out of the trainer, but they cost several times a direct-drive trainer. Worth it if more than one person in the house rides, or you train indoors most of the year.

Which trainer for your budget

Rough tiers based on typical UK pricing. Black Friday can push a model down a tier, which is the whole point of waiting.

  1. 1

    Under £300

Wheel-on smart trainers and entry-level direct-drive models on sale. Good for getting started on Zwift or similar apps, but expect less accuracy and a lower maximum resistance than pricier units.

  2. 2

    £300 to £600

The sweet spot. Mainstream direct-drive trainers live here at sale prices: quiet, accurate and fully interactive. In 2025 the Kickr Core 2 dropped to £399.99 from £499.99 (past price), which is the kind of drop to look for.

  3. 3

    £600 to £1,000

Flagship direct-drive trainers with better road feel, quieter flywheels, higher power ceilings and features like simulated road surfaces. Also where Zwift-ready bundles with a smart frame start to appear.

  4. 4

    Smart bikes

Typically well over £1,000 even on sale. Buy one if the trainer stays set up all winter, several riders share it, or you want your road bike kept for the road.

Zwift Ride and Zwift-ready trainers

Most smart trainers work with Zwift and every other major training app over Bluetooth or ANT+, so “Zwift-ready” on a box is less special than it sounds. What has changed is virtual shifting.

Zwift Cog and Click. Instead of a full cassette, the trainer gets a single fixed cog, and a small Click controller on the bars changes “gears” in the app by adjusting resistance. It means no cassette to buy, no indexing to fiddle with, and any bike with a compatible axle can swap on in seconds. Several trainers now ship with Cog and Click included, the Elite Rivo in our price watch among them.

Zwift Ride. A dedicated smart frame with built-in shifters that sits on a compatible direct-drive trainer, so you get a smart-bike setup without smart-bike money. In 2025 the Zwift Ride with Kickr Core 2 bundle sold for £999.99 (past price).

Worth knowing: Zwift interest peaked early in 2025, around 4 November, weeks before Black Friday. If you want a bundle, watch from early November rather than waiting for the 27th.

What else you need

The trainer is the big spend, but these extras decide whether you actually enjoy riding it. Most are cheap enough to add to a Black Friday basket.

  1. 1

    A cassette (maybe)

Many direct-drive trainers don’t include one. Match the speed count and freehub to your bike. Cog and Click trainers skip this entirely.

  2. 2

    A proper fan

Indoors there’s no airflow, so you overheat fast. A strong fan matters more than any feature upgrade on the trainer.

  3. 3

    A trainer mat

Protects the floor from sweat, cuts vibration noise for neighbours and stops the trainer creeping on hard floors.

  4. 4

    A screen

A tablet, laptop, phone or smart TV box to run the app. Bigger is nicer, but anything that runs the app works.

  5. 5

    An app subscription

Zwift, TrainerRoad and Rouvy are paid, MyWhoosh is free. Most offer a trial, so try before you commit.

  6. 6

    Sweat kit

A towel, a sweat cover for the frame and a second bottle. Sweat is corrosive, and headsets and bars take the brunt.

When do trainer deals land?

Trainers have their own calendar. Demand climbs as the clocks go back, so the timing is a little different from bikes or clothing.

  1. Mid-October

    Now to late October

Trainer searches hit their first peak. Prices are usually full or close to it, so use this time to shortlist and note today’s price.

  2. Clocks go back

    Sunday 25 October

Darker evenings push more riders indoors. Early deals can start appearing from late October.

  3. Zwift bundles

    Early November

Zwift interest peaked around 4 November in 2025 (past). Bundle offers can arrive ahead of Black Friday.

  4. Black Friday

    Friday 27 November

The main event. In 2025 the big trainer offers ran from 28 November to 1 December (past dates). 2026 dates not announced (checked 6 October).

  5. Cyber Monday

    Monday 30 November

Often the last day of the headline trainer prices. Check back if a model sold out on Friday.

  6. Late December

    Christmas to New Year

A second peak in trainer searches. Some retailers run January sales, but there’s no guarantee Black Friday prices return.

How to tell a good trainer deal

A few checks before you buy a trainer:

  • Compare against the lowest tracked price. The product page shows today’s price next to the lowest we have recorded.
  • Watch for outgoing models. A previous-generation trainer at a big discount can be a great buy, as long as it still gets firmware updates and works with your app.
  • Check what’s in the box. Cassette, axle adapters, power cable, Cog and Click. A cheaper trainer that needs a pile of extras is not the cheaper trainer.
  • Know the returns policy. Trainers are heavy and bulky. Find out who pays for return shipping before you buy.

Questions we get asked

Is Black Friday a good time to buy a turbo trainer?

Yes. Trainers are one of the most consistently discounted cycling categories at Black Friday, because it lands right as indoor season gets going. Black Friday 2026 is Friday 27 November and Cyber Monday is Monday 30 November. Check prices against the lowest we’ve tracked before you buy.

How much do smart trainers drop on Black Friday?

It varies by model, and 2026 prices haven’t been announced (checked 6 October). As a guide, in 2025 the Wahoo Kickr Core 2 fell to £399.99 from £499.99 between 28 November and 1 December (past price). Our price-watch cards show the live price and the lowest we’ve tracked for each model.

What’s the best smart trainer for Zwift?

Any modern direct-drive smart trainer works well with Zwift over Bluetooth or ANT+. If you want virtual shifting, look for one compatible with Zwift Cog and Click, or a Zwift Ride bundle. For most riders a mid-range direct-drive trainer is the best value.

Do I need a direct-drive trainer?

Not necessarily. A wheel-on trainer is cheaper and fine for occasional riding. If you plan to train indoors two or more times a week, a direct-drive trainer is quieter, more accurate and kinder to your tyres, and it’s usually where the best Black Friday discounts are.

Is a smart bike worth it over a smart trainer?

Only if the setup stays out all winter, several people share it, or you want to keep your road bike off the trainer. Smart bikes cost several times a direct-drive trainer, and the riding experience is similar.

Do I need a cassette for a direct-drive trainer?

Often, yes. Many direct-drive trainers don’t include one, so you’ll need a cassette matching your bike’s speed count. Trainers that use Zwift Cog and Click use a single cog instead, so no cassette is needed.

Will trainer prices drop again after Christmas?

Sometimes. Trainer searches peak again in late December and some retailers run January sales, but there’s no guarantee Black Friday prices come back, and popular models can sell out. If a price is at or near the lowest we’ve tracked in November, it’s a sound buy.
